America’s Distinct Regional Pizzas

Is there anything better than hanging out at home, watching TV, and ordering a pizza that arrives hot at your doorstep? No, didn’t think so. Delivering food is a staple of modern dining culture, and without it, we would have to do a whole lot more walking than we do now. It might be hard for you to believe, but we haven’t always been able to pick up the phone and get fresh food at our doorstep. There was a time when we had to go out and get it. Thankfully, those days are gone. Here is the history of pizza delivery, and the role we played in spurring it on.

Early beginnings

The history of home pizza delivery is intricately tied to shifting patterns of work and home life. Both men and women began to work outside of home, and for longer periods of time. Couple that with the increased distances that they travelled for work, and you can see why more and more people began to turn to dining out for dinner rather than to cooking for themselves. There just simply wasn’t enough time or energy to cook dinner for everyone every night. It is noted that the early form of Dominoes known as “DomiNick’s Pizza” used delivery as far back as 1961, though they didn’t consider it a major business model.

Our contribution

In order for the industry to really take off, it needed a way to keep pizzas warm and fresh en route to the recipient. That’s where we came in. We pioneered this concept all the way back in the 1970’s, when Covertex engineers developed our ground-breaking pizza bags. As soon as restaurants began to utilize them, they noticed major improvements in the quality of their products. Once we were able to control temperature and moisture, the industry exploded.

Modern times

Pizza delivery has become a staple of modern culture. From its humble beginnings in the USA, to its explosion around the world, people in the millions order this great snack on a daily basis. Through the 80’s it began to grow and grow until it became so ubiquitous in culture, that it was hard to remember a time without it. Today, more than $10 billion dollars are spent annually on delivering pizzas, mostly thanks to our technology.

Sitting at home, ordering a fresh hot pizza that will be in your hands in less than 30 minutes is a luxury that we cannot live without. We don’t like to brag, but Covertex had quite a bit to do with that luxury. So next time you are eating a great pizza at home in front of the TV, remember Covertex bags made it all possible.
